We just returned from a family reunion in Florida, which included a stop at Disney World. I’ve always wanted to take the kids to the magical spot, mostly because of their reputed “gold standard” for catering to customers with dietary restrictions. Okay, I was also curious and wanted to find out if it was all “hype” or “factual”. You guys, it was far from “hype!
Walt Disney World is home to a gazillion restaurants, food carts, and stands. It is the equivalent of a food paradise for people with food allergies and those without. Yes, the menu considers people with special diet needs and goes to great lengths to fulfill their cravings and nutritional requirements. Walt Disney World welcomes people with common food allergies and intolerances and serves foods low in sodium, fat, sugar as well as Kosher and vegetarian meals.
Visitors with special dietary needs and rare allergies, PKU, and metabolic disorders are required to contact and inform Disney, 14 days before arrival — and after making dining reservations. However, if you are averse to certain foods, it pays to do your homework before catching the next flight to Disney. Naturally, you will want to avoid Trattoria Al Forno at Disney’s Boardwalk if gluten makes you sick — considering that Italian dishes are loaded with gluten. But contrary to your assumption, this location has delicious gluten-free options for your eating pleasure.
So before you tour the restaurants, you should do a bit of research by scanning their menus online. It will interest you to know that Disney has several websites dedicated to allergies — making them the perfect research center for your allergy and dietary considerations. But be warned; some restaurants at Disney are not owned by Disney, so you want to tread with caution and do lots of research before satisfying your appetite. On the whole, we love how Disney World takes beautiful care of guests with food allergies and dietary restrictions. Learn more on our blog!
