“The question is how fast new generation can be built,” says Gramlich. “For the past 10 years, our interconnection cues have been filled with a massive percentage of renewables. The renewables are the fastest way to build out new capacity. There’s no doubt in that because of the supply chain issues we have around natural gas turbines.”
But even optimistic scenarios show a multi-year—likely decade-long—process to build the energy infrastructure AI requires. The artificial intelligence revolution may need to slow down and match the speed at which electrons can be delivered.

The collision between AI ambitions and grid reality is forcing a reckoning across the technology industry. Some likely outcomes:
Consolidation: Smaller AI companies without the capital or relationships to secure power will struggle. The field may consolidate around tech giants who can make the multi-billion dollar commitments required for reliable energy access.
