Being a gluten-free food lover with a daughter with severe allergies to nuts, I’m always looking for ways to make eating easier and more fun for us. So I take to learning new allergy-free recipes or revamping regular recipes to suit our health conditions.
It’s way easier to cook our own meals because then we are sure of allergen-free ingredients. In addition, we won’t have to worry so much about a restaurant not being conscious of our dietary restrictions (however, this doesn’t mean we don’t eat out whenever we can).
There are many wonderful recipes out there if you’re looking to make a dessert free of gluten or allergens like eggs or dairy. Still, I hold a special place in my heart for Erin McKenna’s cookbooks. Erin is the founder of the famous vegan bakery, BabyCakes NYC, and her two cookbooks are decadent and fun. She makes baking without using certain ingredients feel like a celebration, not a deprivation.
There’s a new BabyCakes app out, and the whole thing is adorable. It features recipes like Banana Chocolate Chip Teacake; guest appearances by Mark Bittman and Kiernan Shipka (aka Sally from Mad Men); and music from J Mascis, Bubbles, Cults, and Bleached.
If you already have the BabyCakes cookbooks, or are extremely lucky and live near one of the bakeries, maybe you don’t need this. Otherwise, it’s pretty hard to resist.
The BabyCakes app goes for $3.99 on iTunes, and I promise you won’t regret getting it. You can call it your pass to all baking recipes, vegan and gluten-free.
