I’ve had so many people ask me where to go apple picking close to NYC, and until now, I didn’t have a strong suggestion. Yesterday I went on a school field trip to Terhune Farm, close to Princeton, New Jersey. It’s such a great farm for apple picking, getting pumpkins and mums (which normally I don’t like, but theirs were beautiful)…and plenty of other things to do, like feed the farm animals, play on the wooden tractor, corn maze, etc. Since I was with the school, I couldn’t get out and explore the area, but it’s right by Lawrenceville and Princeton, so there are lots of options to build around a visit to the farm. The apples are not organic, but the farm uses a natural chemical from the oil of pyrethrum which they get from the mums they grow. They do grow a lot of other produce that is organic. It’s prime-time this weekend for foliage, and the weather looks to be great for both Saturday and Sunday. If you have other suggestions or favorite spots, please share here!

Another great spot is the Jenkins-Lueken Orchard in New Paltz. It has pumpkins, an apple orchard, a corn maze, and a hay ride that comes with a beautiful view of the Gunks. The best part, though, is the beer and food at the very quaint and kid-friendly Mountain Brauhaus down the road!

I love Jenkins-Luekens, but I didn’t think you could pick your own apples there. And they’re also not organic. The Brauhaus is a great value with good, hearty food.

For organic apples (next year), head over the mountain from New Paltz to Westwind Orchard in Accord.
