I grew up in Southern California, so the idea skiing for the day is a completely foreign. We would drive five hours in a sputtering diesel to Mammouth Mountain and would make a vacation of it. I live in New York now and have only recently rediscovered my love and longing for skiing. Our friend Frank recently told us about Mt. Peter, a little mountain just beyond Tuxedo, NY off the route 17. It’s an hour and change outside of Manhattan and it’s perfect for families. They have very cheap ski school ($100 for 9 weeks of group lessons on Saturday mornings) and a racing school, which turns beginner/intermediate skiers into great skiers in just a season. We opted for private lessons at $55 an hour to get our boys up to speed on our first trip last weekend. There is also a cute lodge with good beer on draft and picnic tables outdoors for when the weather is nice. We even had the grilled cheeseburgers, which were delicious in that simple mountain food sort of way. We’d love to hear about good ski mountains near you so we can compile a national roundup!
