After the first time my buddy Ian’s son Beckett (age 5) saw the original Rocky movie, there was no turning back—he was obsessed. He could not get boxing off his mind. He watched ALL the other movies in the Rocky franchise and then watched them again. When I came over to visit he told me he was a south paw and clobbered me in the nuts. (He’s small with a short reach—I’ll assume he was going for my gut). He would put on the Rocky sound track (Eye of the Tiger ) and do one hand push ups (for real) and ab crunches with head twist just like the Italian Stallion himself. I thought we had to do something about it and contacted my friend John Rosado, a trainer and former Golden Glove winner, to get Beckett in a REAL ring and show him the ropes. John agreed to meet us at the Mendez Gym in NYC to train. Now, the Mendez Gym is a hardcore boxing gym that trains and turns out real fighters. It is raw, hot, and smells of ambition (if you know what I mean). John was terribly impressed with the ultra-ultra lightweight and they had a great first day training. John and Beckett continue to train regularly at Mendez to the sounds of speed bags, rope jumping and the Eye of the Tiger.
