The folks at Canon thought we should try out their new Canon EOS Rebel SL1, so they sent us one, and gave us another so we could have our own contest and give one super lucky reader their own. (First you have to read and look at pictures from our weekend of using it.) Let me preface this post with saying I have a photographer husband, so I’m around a lot of cameras. I still shoot film sometimes, and I definitely shoot maybe too much on my phone. I love photography, but I love sharing information even more, so sometimes I put up a post that doesn’t have the most ideal image, but it gets the point across. So when I see blogs that have perfect imagery, I always think maybe I should get a better camera. This camera for me, at the end of the weekend, seemed like it’s exactly that: it’s so light I can throw it in my bag, it’s not so precious that I worry about it, and it’s super easy to whip out and grab moments, from landscapes to food to life. On this particular weekend, we visited Pilar’s family and friends, who were out on Fire Island.

One night we went to a community lobster dinner–and there were no more tables anywhere. We got creative and found a bench, which Pilar then covered with plastic checkered tablecloth, and then used crates upside-down as seats. A cardboard box with more of that plastic tablecloth lining it became an ice bucket. In the end, we had the best seats at the event.

We played around with lots of settings on the camera–and it was so easy to figure out. Even the kids were snapping away, and since it was so fast, in the low light, it was still sharp.

The next morning the party continued…and we figured we would grab some portraits of the kids.

And some shots of the food we shared…

Sausage and peppers and a huge salad…

Our new favorite way to eat a BLT…it’s gluten-free, and utensil-free too!

Momfilter Canon EOS Rebel SL1 Contest: Here’s the deal—we want to see your special moments, just like what we post everyday on Momfilter in our Remembering section (the opening picture). Send us in your favorite pictures, or just one, along with a title, and a caption if you like. Give us your full name, and an email address (we won’t do anything with it but use it to contact you for this one contest). If you have a website you want us to hyperlink to, give us that too. We can only accept horizontal images (it’s the way our site is built, sorry!) and they need to be 550×380 (550 is the necessary width–if it is a bit larger on the height that’s okay). Only send us pictures you are okay with us publishing on our site, and that we will put up on our Momfilter and Cookie Facebook pages, to further promote the contest. Whatever image we think is really the most outstanding will be the winner, but we will publish the images that are a good fit, throughout the coming months. The contest goes until the end of August, and the winner will be announced on September 4, with the camera going out that week. Send all submissions to

More fine print: You must be 18 to enter this contest. This is not a contest sponsored by Canon. If you are the chosen winner, but you don’t respond within 3 days of being notified, we have to pick another winner. This is a post that was technically sponsored by Canon. But we have to say, that since we don’t ever do these kind of sponsored posts…if we didn’t like the camera, we would not have posted about it. All of our opinions are our own. We swear.
