My sister-in-law made this for my birthday from Gourmet. It’s my favorite cake in the world (gold sprinkles are optional), and it’s fairly simple: Ingredients for cake 2 cups plus 2 tablespoons sifted cake flour (not self-rising; sift before measuring) 1 teaspoon baking powder 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 stick unsalted butter, […]

For my son’s 6th birthday, I connected two 9×13” sheet cakes (a very simple and delicious yellow cake recipe from Martha) with a basic buttercream frosting dyed green and topped them with soccer player cake toppers that I ordered from Amazon. This formula could be applied to tennis, hockey, baseball, etc.

We are not a butter cream kinda family. I know, that might seem weird, but we just don’t like it. So when it comes to frosting, I haven’t found the one that we love, until recently, when our daughter made some box mix cupcakes, and we needed to find a recipe for the frosting. Everyone […]

bday cake

We love this Waldorf inspired “Princess” birthday, that Maine-based mom Jes Antonis, sent into us. Here’s what she had to say about it: “Being a Waldorf mama/family/family of Waldorf teachers…we wanted to incorporate things like dragons, pennants and wool crowns into our “princess birthday” celebration rather than the widely accepted Disney princess version…the cake topper […]

Our friend Sue sent us some pictures from her daughter Lutece’s 7th birthday Adventure to India party—we love this idea! “10 girls eating tandoori chicken skewers, mango lassis with colorful straws and elephant charms hanging off the sides… And then it was all about sari wrapping, henna tattooing, sparkly bangles and bindis! My Indian friend […]

dq cake

I can’t claim any credit for this unbelievably easy ice cream “cake.” I stole it from my sister who stole it from her mother-in-law; and it was the big hit at Mia’s birthday gathering. My newly minted 5-year-old loved that she got to choose whatever ice cream went into it. And I loved that I […]

amie opener

Amie Jones from Salt Lake City sent us in a couple of birthday cakes she made. We loved her creativity and drive. Here’s what she had to say about them: “I have an obsession with seeing how far I can push my cake skills for my kids’ birthdays.  Which mostly involves me thinking of an idea […]

dino cake

Anna Lappas-Collins from Washington, DC sent us this epic cake and genius kid quote (getting emails like this from our Momfilter readers totally makes our day). “Recently my middle son Calvin was turning 4, and about a week before the big day I asked him what kind of birthday cake he wanted.  This is what he […]

Firetruck cake 1

Brooklyn-based mom Torrey sent us in these birthday pictures from three different parties—we love the clever ideas going on here, so we’re showing them all: “I’ve become sort of birthday obsessed since having kids.  Mostly because I remember the great parties that my mom would create for me when I was little–all of them homemade, […]

andrea ni bday monkey cake

Andrea Ni from Clark, NJ, sent us this. “This was for my son’s first birthday.  His BEST buddy was, and is, his monkey (he’s now three), so I wanted to recreate his monkey in cake form.  It was my first sculpted cake, and it was much easier than I thought. I used Nigella’s buttermilk cake […]
