We have known Lucy Sykes, the English-born, New York-based fashion editor and stylist, for years and have always admired her great style. The mother of two boys started a beautiful children’s line called Lucy Sykes right around the time when Cookie launched. We featured her in our first issue and then promptly made her a contributing editor. She is now a stylist and producer of fashion campaigns and shows, as well as an expert tastemaker at ThisNext, a social shopping site.We recently caught up with her at Cafe Cluny and noted her great casual ensemble.
Momfilter: Tell us what you’re wearing?
Lucy Sykes: I am wearing what we call in England a donkey jacket—fab. Heavy boiled wool, a rural country print that feels a bit Ralph. But the best part is that it’s from the new Talbots line–always love a quality get. I tend to wear skinny jeans or pants. These are Rag & Bone, which are always super flattering and are great quality. These sporty high-heeled booties from Tod’s have rubber soles. As for the massive Be&D tote, I have convinced myself it looks better–like an Hermes (I wish) bag–beaten up.
MF: What are some of your tricks?
LS: So there is my muffin top that I like to cover up a bit.
LS: Well, that’s just it, I hide it. It seems that quite a few of my friends after having babies have a hard time with this area. Being mums on the run, we have to fake it until we can realistically deal with it. Since I like my legs I wear skinny jeans and high booties, which elongate the legs. The booties have a rubber sole, which make them just about bearable from drop off till late afternoon.
The coat hits just over my butt, which means no muffin top on display. Underneath I wear a nice ribbed black loose sweater that hits just below hips and covers the muffin area.
MF: What’s your secret weapon?
LS: Are you ready? Spanx, everyday. Why not? My hubby has no idea—who’s to know!
