Entertaining Them

We picked up a copy of this Pictorial Webster’s Pocket Dictionary before a recent road trip, thinking it would be fun for our kids (one a solid reader, one starting to pick out a few words) to flip through. The pictures are amazing–about 200 super detailed antique engravings that once filled the pages of Webster’s 19th century dictionaries–and the entries range from the mysterious (armillary sphere) to the vintage medical (digestive apparatus) to the mundane (honey bee). We passed it around and all picked out our favorites, which included the entries for fandango and diodon.  It’s compact size makes it highly portable and packable, and it’s nice that it’s digestible for pre-readers as well as sophisticated and informative enough for older kids (and adults).
