Entertaining Them

I have hazy late-70s memories of playing with spatulas and whisks during the witching hour while my mom whipped up a tuna noodle casserole or teriyaki chicken. And I’ve found those kitchen tools to be the surest way to entertain my own babies while I cook—I just plunk down our red canister full of exciting-looking utensils, and Livie is entranced. Sometimes even the big girls get in on the action; pretty soon a wooden spoon or a potato masher becomes an exotic wand for a fairy princess.
