Andrea Ni from Clark, NJ, sent us this. “This was for my son’s first birthday. His BEST buddy was, and is, his monkey (he’s now three), so I wanted to recreate his monkey in cake form. It was my first sculpted cake, and it was much easier than I thought. I used Nigella’s buttermilk cake recipe and an American buttercream. I used several vessels for baking the cakes, including a 6″ cake pan, a large glass bowl, and small pyrex ramekins. The arms, legs, ears and tail are sculpted out of rice crispy treats.
(By the way, we’d love to see your pictures—preferably horizontals—of silly, funny, clever, or otherwise show-stopping birthday cakes you or someone you know has made. And if you’re further inspired, we’d love to see the whole party. Send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please include your name, how you would like to be credited, the occasion, the recipe, and the inspiration or story behind the cake. Images must be 550×380 pixels wide.)
