Our friend (and Momfilter contributor) Lisa found herself in a situation that many urban dwellers do: birthdays in city apartments are just not that easy. But somehow, through perseverance and lots of creative energy, she managed to pull this off, with huge success, her son’s 5th birthday.
“I tried really hard to do something memorable without spending a lot of money. We had moustaches by the door for everyone to wear. I wanted to do fun but cheap goody bags so I did make your own sock puppets (this is the assembly line), bubble bath in travel bottles that said “magical bubbles that will turn you into a mermaid or a sea creature” (and other fun things) as a few examples…all super cheap. I struggled with interesting goody bags that weren’t junky or too expensive.
We put umbrellas up inside the apartment (like forts), had fried chicken delivered from Hill Country Chicken., pretzels from Sigmund’s Pretzels, and blasted the Stones. Super fun!”

Hysterical! So often our birthday party ideas go Olympic-style when they would have been happy with a mustache party. Lesson learned.
how fun! great ideas.
Gosh, what a relief to see such an un-styled (ie no desert table, OTT goody bags, matching cupcake toppers etc etc) and genuinely fun birthday party. Loved the kids checking out their ‘staches and the sock puppets are just genius. Breath of fresh air.
