Baby

It wasn’t the doll-sized diapers, laundered onesies or eensy cotton tufts posing as socks that made me feel ready for baby, but rather the bookcase lined with children’s books. I realized how totally impractical this was. Still, when I bolted up in bed one morning in overblown nesting mode, my husband indulged my panic by wrestling with the gajillion piece Ikea shelving unit as impossible to assemble as it was to pronounce.

We had stacks of books that needed a proper perch following the two generous book-themed baby showers thrown for us. One was an actual party, the other was put-on via mail, and both were really meaningful. People tracked down their favorite books from childhood or gifted current discoveries, and rarely was a title repeated. As embarrassed as I was to do the whole gift opening in front of other people thing, the reminiscing over long-forgotten characters or introduction to new ones was something everyone got into at the shower.

The book theme is not a pricey proposition for guests, and the gift is still incredibly thoughtful. It would be just right for showering a co-worker, neighbor or out-of-town friend. And for this parent-to-be, it put me at ease to have familiar characters like Nicholas the Bunny and the old lady whispering hush at the ready for the great unknown of life with baby.

I couldn’t agree more! My sister threw me a “Books Brunch” shower for my first – we had already gotten the Bugaboo and a nice crib from some family relatives. The brunch was for friends from all walks of my life and everyone was asked to bring their favorite childhood book. It was so fun to open and talk about the selections – sometimes funny to see how inappropriate some of our favorite childhood stories now seem:) The books are wonderfully inscribed and I love reading them with my children!
