At Home

For the past 10 years or so I have been giving my husband antique sterling napkin rings for Christmas. They are mostly mismatched and many have engravings. We try to imagine the histories of the owners from the inscriptions–”Nettie 1925″ or “Christmas 1861.” During the holidays, I ask my family members to remember their own rings and to reuse cloth napkins at least for a couple of meals when they haven’t gotten dirty (I know, very Depression era).

These are beautiful. Thanks for sharing. In my grandmother’s house everyone has their own unique napkin ring. It is a wonderful practice that I think I should start with my family.

We each have our own rings with our name on them. They were a present from our friends who go to the South of France each summer and are handmade with our names dotted on each. They are so very precious to us. I recommend everyone use rings and cloth napkins, much more civilized!
